K-9 Programs

SIDES is a BC public school in School District 63 that provides free educational programs K-12 for BC residents. SIDES Kindergarten-Grade 9 programs follow the BC Ministry of Education mandated curriculum.

Student engagement is a key factor in academic success. Students are expected to consistently participate in scheduled connections with their teacher and actively engage in their learning by submitting assignments on a regular basis. Ongoing participation allows teachers and administrators to provide timely feedback, monitor progress, and offer support when needed, helping students stay on track and achieve their learning goals.

For students in K - 9, learning is primarily supported by a full-time Home Facilitator, most often a parent or guardian, and this role is a significant daily commitment. Home Facilitators are expected to provide consistent instructional support, maintain regular communication with teachers, and ensure assignments are submitted on time and feedback is reviewed with the student. Families should have reliable access to technology, including a computer and internet, and be willing to learn and use multiple online platforms. A dedicated workspace, regular instructional hours, advance preparation for lessons, and participation in virtual or on-site classes when required are essential. Home Facilitators also play a key role in supporting student well-being and creating a focused, supportive learning environment at home.

Elementary

SIDES elementary programs offer all of the curriculum content through engaging, clearly organized lessons delivered through our online course management system, SIDES Online. Students are also provided with books and print resources that accompany the online lessons.

Please download the PDF flyer for more detailed information about our elementary programs:

SIDES students and their Home Facilitators receive support from their SIDES Teacher with program delivery, assignment feedback and assessment, weekly onsite classes, and live online vclasses. Your child’s teacher will complete formal report cards three times a year (December, March and June).

Middle School

Middle school includes grades 6 - 9. While grades 6 - 8 are designed to be delivered by a full-time Home Facilitator, grade 9 is designed for more independent study.

Grade 9 is designed for more independent study, but parents are encouraged to stay connected and monitor their children's engagement. Grade 9 courses are offered as part of a grade 9 program (full-time SIDES student) or offered to Grades 9 students who attend a neighbourhood school but want to supplement with online courses.

SIDES 6-9 programs offer all of the curriculum content through engaging, clearly organized lessons delivered through our online course management system, SIDES Online. Students are also provided with books and print resources that accompany the online lessons.

Inclusive Education

The SIDES Inclusive Education Department provides support for School of Record (SOR) students with Ministry designations. Once required documentation has been received, reviewed and approved by the Inclusive Education team, each student is assigned a case manager who supports the development and implementation of the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). SIDES offers a range of inclusive education supports, both online and in person, with Educational Assistant (EA) support allocated based on priority of need. Supports for schools are allocated prior to the end of September. Students and families who register after the Ministry funding date will be directed to complete a joint application with their current school, provide a current IEP, and participate in a transition meeting to best determine appropriate supports and next steps.
